Therapies Can Be Like Pulling Off A Bandaid/Plaster

Therapies such as counselling, hypnotherapy, EMDR, regression therapies, marriage counselling, anger management and group/family therapies among others are designed to help you move past the point you currently find yourself in, where you are using substances to mask the emotional pain that you experienced and as a protective measure, your body tells you to “forget” about the issue as it’s still emotionally painful to think or speak about so this protective measure can be why you find yourself turning to substances to cope.

Better understanding the benefits of therapy and why you should consider undergoing therapy is going to be a really important decision when it comes to your recovery and moving on from past traumas which may hold you back or cause you to relapse in the future.

Working with a therapist will help you to work through those past traumas and help to not only deal with past issues, but also to teach you better, positive coping strategies to better deal with the life you currently find yourself in and slowly attempt to guide you towards a happier, healthier life that’s free of substances.

Once you begin to deal with the issues that led you to become dependent upon substances to function, the physical dependency upon substances will also become easier to overcome.

The Bucket Theory

The bucket theory has been created by Drink ‘n’ Drugs to help you better understand the reasons why your body has turned to substances to cope.

Imagine a big bucket, this bucket represents you and your body. The contents of your bucket, whatever you want to imagine is in it represents your negative life experiences.

As you go through life, you begin to slowly fill your bucket with the negative experiences, any forms of abuse that you might have experienced, hard decisions, grief and loss, marriage/civil partnerships separations and divorces and physical, criminal convictions, homelessness or rough sleeping and mental health problems among many others.

You try to function daily, going the things that you want to do, the things you enjoy or once enjoyed, your socialisation with family and friends, careers, children, responsibilities, finances and commitments just to list a few.

Over time, your bucket becomes heavier and heavier, it takes more and more effort to function normally, even to do the little, simple things.

Once your body and mind comes to meet its breaking point and your bucket cannot hold anymore contents without over spilling, you need to do something about it if you want to return to a life where you can function normally and do the things that you want to do, free from the dependence upon substances and the constantly metaphorical weight of those negative past experiences and this is where therapies come into play.

Therapies such as

  • Counselling
  • Hypnotherapy
  • EMDR
  • Regression therapies
  • Marriage counselling
  • Anger management
  • Group & family therapies
  • And others

These therapies can often initially feel as though your slowly pulling off that metaphorical plaster or bandaid. You’re finally working through those issues that you’ve been keeping hold of inside your bucket.

The therapist or healthcare professional will employ various strategies and techniques to help you begin to empty your bucket. This will help you to better understand your past traumas, teach you other, more appropriate, effective coping strategies that you can use to manage any negative situations you may encounter.

This will help you to achieve the following:

  • Improves your physical health
  • Improves your mental health
  • Improves relationships with family, friends and children (where appropriate)
  • Help you to use better, positive thought processes
  • Improves your work, education prospects
  • Reduces/eliminates your need to be dependent upon substances to cope daily
  • Helps to reduce the intensity of withdrawal symptoms
  • Helps you to improve other areas of your life, such as diet/nutrition, exercise, smoking and ultimately increases your life expectancy
  • Helps to improve your usage of creative hobbies and interests as coping strategies such as drawing, painting, up-cycling and others
